Willy Nilly Friday 5 No. 66

Willy Nilly Friday 5 No. 66

Sharing some randomness today.

1. There’s been a lot of activity on our road lately, road work/dump trucks/noise. Today, we finally figured out what they were preparing to do–milling and paving. Yay, new road soon!

2. I’m missing the White-throated Sparrows this winter. I’ve only seen three. In previous years we’ve had a dozen or more.

3. Why do football play-offs and the warmest day of winter (66*F) happen on the same day? Hubby was weary from a 12-hour workday, Saturday, so we stayed in and watched football.

4. Our Painted Bunting must have moved on. I haven’t seen him since early December.

5. This pigeon is a regular customer. It’s been frequenting our feeder since 2008.

Wild Bird Wednesday–Painted Bunting

Wild Bird Wednesday

The Painted Bunting is a medium-size finch.

This little fellow showed up last week–too late for Wild Bird Wednesday. I didn’t see him again until five days later. I’m glad he is still in our area and hope he’ll spend the winter with us. He’s a rather rare sighting here, a bit north of their normal summer breeding territory.

I’m experimenting with a new blog theme for the holidays. If you don’t see a comment box at the bottom of this post, please click the post title at the top. That should open it in a new page, which will include the comment box at the bottom. I do love to hear from you. Thanks!

Around and About

I had to be up early to drive hubby to work, so I snapped a few shots of autumn in December to share with you.

A Painted Bunting (male) visited us for the first time 12/3.
Can you find the Great Blue Heron?

There are fences in the background of some of these, but they blend into the scenery. Honest! How about a bulkhead, then? It fences the water in…?

Random 5 Friday

Nancy at a Rural Journal hosts Random 5 Friday each week. Here are my random thoughts for today:

  • Our female Painted Bunting is still visiting, after all. She’s been checking out the different feeders, reminds me of Goldilocks. As you can tell, I’m still experimenting with white balance for a snowy background.

  • Met my hubby for lunch today at Panera Bread. They have several new items on the menu. I tried the Winter Power Salad, hubby had Chicken Sorrentina Pasta, both with soup. We would have those again. We also shared an Apple Crunch Muffin–YUM!
  • Our area is holding an E-cycling event tomorrow. Household hazardous waste and electronic items will be collected in the Virginia Aquarium parking lot from 10-2:00 (for locals who haven’t heard). More information is available at vbgov.com
  • I started writing Morning Pages again this week. That’s three pages of handwritten stream-of-consciousness brain dump, first thing in the morning.
  • Here’s another mermaid for you, this is one of my favorites:

Wild Bird Wednesday 77–Mystery Bird

I have a mystery bird for Wild Bird Wednesday. Can anyone ID it for me?

We’ve had a new visitor in our backyard the last 2-3 weeks. It’s similar in size to the Song Sparrow, and feeds on the ground. It resembles pictures of a female or immature Painted Bunting, though it seems to be a bit farther north than expected.

It’s a very pretty little bird, and a creature of habit. I always find it eating in the same spot, and turned the same direction. Maybe it’s camera shy?

Happy New Year to Stewart and the birders at Wild Bird Wednesday!
