Voices

I write for my church’s website and don’t usually share my devotional writing on my blog. With all that’s going on with our HVAC installation this week, I requested they pull one from the archives. As I read the selection this morning, some of it really hit home, I even questioned, “I wrote this?” Maybe someone else needs to hear this today.

Voices

Low self-esteem and humility are not the same thing. Low self-esteem is a lack of confidence in one’s worth or abilities; humility is a low view of one’s own importance.

Do you have a voice in your head that berates and belittles your actions, or what it deems infractions?

  • How could I have been so dumb/foolish/stupid/crazy?
  • Maybe I was a mistake.
  • Why can’t I get it right?
  • You think you’re a writer/musician/speaker/parent?
  • How can God love me?

You know who is behind this negative talk, don’t you?

He (the devil) was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I (Jesus) have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10

The Holy Spirit convicts me for believing these things that are contrary to what God says about me. It certainly doesn’t bring glory to God. I degrade and defeat myself at every turn. That doesn’t sound like a person full of joy and light, does it?

This is what God’s voice says:

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.

 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.

For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. Isaiah 43:1-3

God says, “You are mine.” This is why we need to make time to read our Bible and get in some face time with Him—so we know His voice and heed it.

The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. John 10:3-4

Be kind, not only to one another, but to yourself.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

UPDATE

Here’s the update some of you requested, the follow-up on speaking to my writers group this evening.  I should let you know, I’m not one to get up in front of a people. The first time I read a devotional I’d written, my knees knocked loudly. I had a stool on hand tonight–just in case the knees gave out.

Aside from a small media issue, where we had to call in the head of the media department, who, thankfully, was working late, it went pretty well.

The highlight, I thought, were your wonderful comments that I shared with the group. Your stories took away the fear of the blog and put relationships with real people in the forefront. No matter where we are on this planet, we have so much in common–we laugh, we cry, we hope and pray, and encourage one another.

As writers, so often we hear “you need a blog, an online presence, you have to market yourself and your product.” That is usually followed by a groan from the masses. I hope I was able to convey that blogging is much more, it can even be fun.

I can’t thank you enough for your heartfelt words regarding your blogging lives, your encouragement to me, and to them. Who knows? Maybe we’ll have some new blogging friends join us soon.

Weekly Photo Challenge–Fresh

FRESH is the topic of  WordPress’ Weekly Photo Challenge.

 Crape Myrtles are in full bloom, bestowing their beauty and fragrance freely. Their peeling bark caught my eye as I walked to my car after church this morning.

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away, all things are made new. God made him (Jesus–who had no sin) to be sin for us, so that in Him, we could become the righteousness of God and be reconciled to Him.

Let us throw off everything that hinders, and the sin that so easily entangles.

Let us throw off everything that hinders, and the sin that so easily entangles. Father God, remove our doubts and fears, and fill us with a fresh, new faith.

That’s my take on the Weekly Photo Challenge–FreshClicking the blue links will open a new browser window, and you can see how others responded to this challenge.
