The front porch of the writers retreat hummed with none other than the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. This is the only hummingbird that breeds east of the Mississippi River.

They swarmed the lone feeder, expending even more energy fending off rivals. Occasionally, one would perch on a branch off the second-floor porch to await its turn.

Peering over the¬†edge of the upper balcony, I had a bird’s-eye view of the feeder hanging on the porch below.
