Wild Bird Wednesday #106–Downy Fledgling

Hubby went outside to do some yard work and found a fluttering fledgling Downy Woodpecker in the yard. It had made its way to the ground, but was unable to fly. I snapped a couple quick pictures and left it at the base of the oak tree, thinking it might be able to creep its way up. I couldn’t find it the next morning, so I’m hoping for the best.

At first the twig seemed to be an obstacle.

At first the twig seemed to be an obstacle…

...but with a little fluttering of its wings, it appeared ready to take on the tree trunk.

    • I hope so, too, Linda. We’ve had a pair of them around for a few years, so I don’t imagine the parents were very far away. The dad helps take care of the young, too.

    • Especially when we’ve seen a cat from time to time, Dianna. We wanted to keep it safe, but it’s advised to leave them. The parents aren’t far away, and the little one learns survival skills. It’s so hard to leave them, though.

  1. Hope it was OK – in a few weeks it will be drilling holes in your house!

I’ve been in the UK for a month and I let the blog sit on the back burner – normal service will resume soon!
