Wild Bird Wednesday–American Coot

This week, I’m featuring the American Coot for Wild Bird Wednesday.

The American Coot looks like a small duck in the water, but on land, they resemble a chicken. They are more closely related to the Sandhill Crane. Their feet are not webbed like a duck’s. They are found throughout North America, on just about any open body of water where they feed on aquatic vegetation.

  1. I always liked coots. I do not like their name though. I didn’t know that about their relatives or that they don’t have webbed feet. That’s so curious. Pretty neat learning new things. Thanks so much. đŸ™‚

    • I don’t remember seeing them around here. Maybe I wasn’t paying attention? They stayed in the water, so I learned about their feet as I read about them. I’ll have to go back for pictures of those! Thanks for the visit, E.C.
