It’s time for Random 5 Friday! Join in the fun and share five random thoughts about you, your day, your kids, your pets, whatever! Here are mine:
- We got about 8″ of snow Tuesday-Wednesday, not something we see often in Virginia Beach
- A flock of blackbirds moved in, took over the feeders
- Gulls were swooping in low over the neighborhood, their food sources frozen or buried in snow–and not many folks leaving them French fries in the parking lotI whipped up a batch of Quacker Crackers from a bird-feeding cookbook and invited them over. They effectively displaced the blackbirds, for a change of scenery.
- This week’s storm created an even larger icicle collection than the one we had last week
- Here’s another Mermaid on Parade–her paint has seen better days
Linking to Random 5 Friday
The mermaid must be cold with all that snow and ice. Keep warm.

It’s wonderful you help keep the birdies fed during the harsh winter days. I feel so sad for the wildlife in the winter.
Those icicles are amazing. Pretty and somewhat Christmassy lol.

We did get a reprieve from the cold this past weekend, Eileen. It rained today (Monday), then that cold wind started blowing again.

I wondered how to get the gulls to come to the yard, Theresa. A “lookout” was perched on our neighbors roof, so I waved the baggie of crackers and tossed a couple into the snow. It wasn’t long until several gathered around. Their webbed feet make really cool tracks in the snow. π

Not sure which I’d rather have – blackbirds or gulls. Both are numerous here in the summer, but luckily the gulls stick to the lake and don’t come into the yard. The blackbirds however just take right over.
Do me a favor. Tell them to bypass my lawn when they leave there and come north. Thanks. π

I’m sure the gulls would leave more mess than the blackbirds, Drusilla. After they ate the crackers, they pecked at the cracked corn in the snow, but didn’t stay long. I’ll passed the word to the blackbirds, but I don’t think they were listening!

This was only the second time they’ve visited our yard, Nancy. One year, I’d mixed a cornmeal/peanut butter ball recipe for the squirrels, but the gulls came and carried them off.
