First Day of School
by Patti Jarrett

The sand of August was swept from our feet and replaced with the socks and shoes of September. School doors swung wide, swallowing students, teachers, office staff, the cafeteria ladies, and the janitor. The semester’s goal was to survive until Christmas, and the temporary cessation of studies.

  1. Very nice! I love the first sentence. The first day of school was always so exciting. I remember the school would post the class list a week before school started, so my parents would take us to see which class we were going to be in. This only added to the anticipation and excitement!

  2. You described back-to-school perfectly. This period of the year was always a challenge for me and a relief at the same time. A mixture of pleasure and disappointment. A few more moments of quiet, but the absence of their presence too much of the day.
