This Thursday, February 18th, marks the beginning of the 14th annual Great Backyard Bird Count. (GBBC) Clicking on the previous link will take you to the website where you can get ALL the details. The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds.
What? You don’t have a backyard? No problem! You can count birds ANYWHERE YOU WANT! Do you have a favorite park, beach, etc? This is a wonderful activity to get children involved and outside exploring nature. You can pick up a field guide for the birds typically found in your region at any bookstore or birding supply shop to help with identification. You will find the forms for recording your results here. When finished, return to the GBBC website to enter your findings.
Have fun, and be sure to come back and leave a comment to let me know about your experience! Trust me, you’ll be hooked! Wild Birds Unlimited is an excellent resource if there’s one near you.
